Activity Description

This educational lunch symposium has been designed to enhance clinical knowledge surrounding left atrial appendage exclusion for stroke prophylaxis in AF patients, its role as an adjunctive therapy to AF treatment, and current catheter ablation approaches to persistent AF.

In the first session, participants will review embryology and anatomy of LAA, as well as stroke and bleeding risks in patients with AF, and examine significant LAA closure data. Next, attendees will observe best practices in patient selection, and optimal LAA exclusion procedural approaches through a review of study data, along with expert clinical experiences. The third session will explore current catheter ablation approaches to persistent AF, and consider the impact sinus rhythm maintenance has for reducing cardioembolic stroke. The final session will analyze the role of LAA exclusion as adjunctive therapy to AF treatment, concluding with panel discussions and an engaging Q&A session.

Activity Goal

This activity is designed to address the following ABMS/IOM competencies: Patient Care, Medical Knowledge, and Practice-Based Learning.

Cardiac Rhythm Management

Target Audience

This activity has been developed to meet the educational needs of electrophysiologists, cardiologists and other physicians and associated professionals who are dedicated to managing patients with Atrial Fibrillation.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this educational activity, participants will be able to:

  • Evaluate embryology and anatomy of the left atrial appendage, and assess thrombus formation in the LAA.
  • Discuss clinical trial data in LAA exclusion and investigate optimal patient selection strategies to identify candidates for interventional therapy.
  • Review current catheter ablation approaches for persistent AF, and discuss the impact of sinus rhythm maintenance for reducing cardioembolic events.
  • Consider the role of LAA exclusion as adjunctive therapy for AF ablation.
